5 Self-Care Activities (Spring Edition)

The start of Spring is a sweet reunion after the cold, dark days of Winter. Many of us experience difficulties with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) over the winter months. This can manifest as a depressed mood, low energy/motivation, irritability, and even hopelessness. The culprit for this is the lack of sunlight we receive in the winter. The good mood you’re in after sitting in the sun is not imagined! Sunshine is a natural provider of Vitamin D and serotonin, both of which play a role in mood regulation and energy levels.

As energy levels begin to naturally increase over the course of Spring, it makes it a great time to revitalize or begin a self-care regimen to bolster and repair mental health, especially if you’ve struggled with seasonal depression over these last few months.

Here are 5 self-care activities that anyone can do to promote mental wellness and enjoy the best parts of Spring.

  1. Picnic in the park. All you need is a blanket and your favorite snack or easy-lunch. Bring company or go solo. People-watch, read a book, talk to a friend, listen to music, enjoy the fresh air.

  2. Backyard meditation. Find a patch of grass, plant your feet on the earth, close your eyes, and notice as many sensations as you can. The feeling of cool grass on your skin, the whisper of the wind through the trees, the warmth of the sun on your face, the faint smell of fresh flowers, birds singing. Breathe deeply.

  3. Reflect and journal. Spring is symbolic of new beginnings. In the spirit of the season, explore what new beginnings you want to see in your own life. Allow yourself to embody hope, change, and rebirth.

  4. Wildflower arrangement. Spring flowers like daffodils, geraniums, and violets are blooming. Tap into your creativity and make your own unique arrangement. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. Just flow and appreciate the beauty of nature.

  5. Go for a hike or a walk. Research has found that walking outdoors has a calming effect on the nervous system. Whether you are walking alone or with a friend, your brain and body will appreciate the chance to take in your surroundings, breathe fresh air, and lightly elevate your heart rate.
